I’ve fielded this question many times over the past few weeks.
There’s still so much we don’t know or want to experience, so I can’t honestly say…yet. I can, however, make a recommendation. Watch Portlandia on IFC. Haven’t caught it yet? It’s quirky and fun. Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein are super funny. Kenny and I are building an obsession – and on the two Sunday nights we’ve been home together since we moved into our house in mid-December, we’ve watched all the episodes available on Comcast’s OnDemand. (And I secretly Hulu clips without Kenny. Shhhh…)
So, I am going to borrow Portlandia’s snapshot of this fabulous town for now – until I develop my own informed view. This video seems to be a tongue-in-cheek-but-with-a-healthy-slice-of-reality chuckle inducer to a newbie like me who has very limited Portland experiences. We’ve seen just about every example* Fred and Carrie highlight in the video – IN REAL LIFE. Oh, the indescribable joy of seeing of your everyday** experiences come alive on the small screen…
*Thankfully, we’ve not seen the hat-headed, bearded, tatted, banana-hammocked dude yet. I wouldn’t be able to navigate the giggles and questions the kids would undoubtedly have with a straight face. And yes, Kenny has seen children – on three separate occasions – riding unicycles to school. Elementary schoolers. (Grandparents / aunts / uncles – make note for birthday gift ideas – hahaha!)
**Or every weekend day for those of us who work from home and don’t get out much during the week – like this girl pointing to herself while typing with one hand.
