Our First Holiday in Portland

November 24, 2011

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!

Today marks our first holiday in our new city. It’s a little sad. We’re so far away from everyone we love, but it also forces us to take time to slow down and relax. A novelty for sure!

Luckily, we were still able to keep one tradition alive  – the Philadelphia Thanksgiving Day parade. WPVI streams it live and thank goodness. Portland doesn’t have a parade and they only broadcast the Chicago parade. And for all the kitsch of the Philadelphia parade – it’s actually really well done. The Chicago parade … left us wanting. Wanting what? I can’t pinpoint it. It was just much lamer. Much. I think we were just so glad a Thanksgiving didn’t slip by without a Justin Guarini performance. (What the heck happened to his hair?!)

We also did some Thanksgiving crafts and created our very own turkey farm with markers, paper and natural coffee filters. The one with all the eyes definitely carved its lot in life: ground turkey. The rest have a shot at making it to centerpiece status on someone’s holiday table. We’re taking the opportunity to try out Jake’s Famous Crawfish in Downtown Portland. It’s an icon here – and is serving up a traditional Thanksgiving dinner today (in addition to the regular menu). It’s a far cry from recent years where we cooked the big dinner for our families and enjoyed the day hanging out, and perusing all the Black Friday ads. It will be different – but fun!

Wishing you all a wonderful day!
