This year, one of my goals is to rock dinner. I haven’t been great about cooking lately, and I used to really love to cook. Of course, that was before kids, taking on a gigantic job and moving across the country. So, this year, I am going to try to be better. And when I find recipes that I can pull off – and more importantly, that my family liked – I will share them with all of you in case you’re interested. So far this week, I have two winners under my belt! (I cooked three nights so far, but one of the meals was just my usual spaghetti and meatballs. That’s a meal I pretty consistently cook well, so it doesn’t count.)

But before I get into all that, I want to further set the scene so you know what I am up against here. This afternoon, I decided to make the kids smoothies as a healthy, filling treat before their evening swim lessons. Nothing crazy – just a frozen banana, some blueberries that we picked over the summer and froze, some milk and some brown sugar.

I put it all in the blender.

And my blender literally fell apart when I turned it on:

Those black bits? Yeaaaaa. They are from the bottom of the blender pitcher. Needless to say, it no longer works.

I was a tad frustrated, but had a back up.

Worked awesome. Until I couldn’t get the dang cup detached from the motor thingie. Literally stuck in there like I super-glued it. Will. Not. Budge.

I tried until my hands hurt. I tried with rubber oven mitts to get a better grip. I tapped the sides lightly to hopefully loosen it up. Nope. Here it is – looking delish…but, alas, it’s like the forbidden fruit. No smoothies for us.

In response, I channeled my inner Den Flannery and threw the whole thing – just as you see it above – in the trash.  That’s right – smoothie attached to the smoothie-making machine…all in the trash. (For those of you who don’t know my dad, he’s a wonderful man. But he’s a wonderful man who is not known for his patience.)

As for the kids? They are now eating plan C – a banana and an orange. Plain. Straight up. They are happy with that option – so instead of trying to be super mom, perhaps I should have just started there. Haha.

So, my friends, between today’s kitchen antics, combined with those I previously documented here and here you can see that rocking dinner is a lofty goal for me to have. I am sure this is not the last of my shenanigans. 😉

  1. Ha!! Yeah, dinner is something I am consistently struggle with. We have 2 or 3 decent ones, and then I’ve lost focus and it’s back to leftovers or pancakes.

  2. Agree with Big Den … perfect solution. Save those frozen blueberriers for adult drinks and for pancakes. Much more satisfying.
    Dinner with a daily struggle … and last night between Julia having basketball and me coaching a game, we had grilled cheese and carrots. rockin’ the A List dinners
